Coronavirus outbreak: Dreadly As Lagos State Government Shutdown Markets

Ordering families to stay at home may be a challenge for families but the worst is when there is no access to the needs of the families due to the closure of markets. The state may have a plan to solve the problems that will arise as a result of the order but that may not be effective due to the fact that there is no structure in place. Lagos state has been the state with the highest number of corona virus infection in Nigeria. The governor of the state in conjunction with the federal government have been putting measures in place in order to curtail the spread of the pandemic. Reality has shown that all their efforts are not yielding the desired result as the cases of the pandemic has been increasing despite the efforts of the affected authorities.

The markets closed may be non essential markets but to draw a line between what is essential and what's not to the people would be a hard task due to individual differences. The government of Lagos state had previously announced the closure of schools and banned social and religious gathering that is more than 50 persons and later reduced the number of persons to 20. The governor also instructed the civil servants to work from home pending the control of the ravaging virus. As at Tuesday March 24th, the governor of Lagos state Sanwolu instructed that all markets in the state should be closed as a measure to implement the social distancing in the state.

Are the government of Nigeria really ready for this outbreak? The federal government have also order the total closure of the country's land border as a followup of the initial order banning international flight into the country from countries with high cases of corona virus. Lagos being the center of activities in the country has suffered the outbreak more than any other state. The National leader of the All Progressive People Congress Bola Tinubu has stated that he will support a total lockdown if it's necessary the curb the spread of the virus citing United Kingdom as an example.

The virus has for now been identified among the high class leading to some calling it "big man disease". Some of the prominent people affected include: Atiku's son, governor of Bauchi and the aids of Abba Kyari. Some are speculating that Kyari has tested positive to the virus but the presidency are yet to confirm it. With Nigeria having less than 500 ventilators, we can only pray that the poor masses stay safe from the virus. If the disease spread beyond the present number, Nigeria will need external help which is not readily available as many countries are battling with their own problems.
